Description:
This position will work closely with recreation staff on a variety of projects including visitor use data collection, backcountry vehicle/UTV patrols, trail maintenance, site cleanup, public outreach opportunities and Interpretation staff assistance at our Public Lands Visitor Center. In addition, the intern will assist in data management within the specific agency’s database system. Position will also work with archaeology and range staff on other projects. Training for field, interpretation and data entry techniques will be provided. Camping gear, field transportation and field equipment are provided. This position will work with the Ecologist in conducting botanical surveys and vegetation monitoring using specialized techniques. In addition, the intern will assist in data management within the specific agency’s database system.
Responsibilities:
This position requires the ability to work independently or in a team environment while taking direction and training from a supervisor. Job will require use of GPS units to collect data, hand tools for trail work and hand-held power equipment for site cleanup. Field work may require some hiking on uneven terrain and some strenuous physical activities. Overnight camping will be required.
Qualifications:
- This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team setting while also being capable of working independently on assignments with minimal supervision.
- It requires basic computer skills.
- The willingness to work outdoors in a variety of locations, and being capable of hiking across uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions carrying a field pack, water, and personal supplies.
- Position requires the ability to identify plant species common to southern Utah/northern Arizona (on-the-job training will be provided).
- The position requires travel on the Monument for up to 4 days at a time.
- Lodging on these trips varies from cabins to camping in tents.
- Candidate must have a current state issued driver license and be able to demonstrate safe driving skills to obtain federal driver license, and requires experience and/or the ability to safely operate 4x4 vehicles in rough or mountainous terrain.
- Candidate must pass a federal background check.
